Why does my air conditioner engage when I turn on the defrost in my car?

I have a 2007 Mazda m3. I can hear what sounds like the AC engaging when the defrost is on (whether the temperature is set to cold or hot). The AC light does not come on but I can hear the AC running under the hood.
