Boyfriend's relationship with God?

So, my boyfriend and I have been together for almost a year and a half, I am 18, he is 17. He's recently been confiding in me that his relationship with God isn't where he wants it to be. He's told me he feels like it's hard to pray because he feels like he is talking to himself. He's actively involved in our youth group, however our new youth pastor has some beliefs and an attitude that neither of us agree with and he doesn't feel comfortable talking with him about this issue. He told me that he admires me greatly for my relationship with God and wants his to be the same way, but he just doesn't know how. He says things like he doesn't understand the Bible, he thinks it's very complicated and hard to understand, and he thinks God is too complicated as well. I've tried suggesting things like getting a different translation of the Bible. I've even written out devotions for him to do, which he said is helping a little. He said he prays with an open heart and an open mind but he just doesn't feel God talking to him. I remind him that there are times when God is silent in our lives, and His ways are beyond our comprehension. We don't always understand why He does what He does, but we can always trust that He only does it for our good. I would really appreciate any help on this situation and how I can help him with this. No smart comments, please. Neither of us have any plans on converting to atheism, we both love God very much. He's just stuck in a situation and neither of us know what to do. Thank you.
