Styrofoam not okay in microwave?

I always defrost my meat in the microwave on the styrofoam that it comes on from the grocery store and never had a problem, but this time it started a FIRE!!! Was it because the package edges were touching the edges of the microwave- i haven't put that big of a package in before. or is it better just to take meat off the styrofoam all together?
