How much of American political thinking, especially at the extremes, is based on false dichotomies?

I think that I draw the line at or endorse the notion that individuals are better able to decide what is favorable for themselves and their communities, that if a choice must be made between government making the choices for the people or the people having more power over their cirstance, I must favor the people having power over their lives.
